Drink Water With Electrolytes - Our Bodies Really Need Water

The human body is a water machine, designed essentially to run on water and minerals. Every life giving and healing process that happens inside our body... happens with water. Our bodies are estimated to be about 60 to 75% water. Not only is our body 75% water, our brain is 80% water and our blood 90%. Water is more than a carrier of other materials. It is a solvent, an infiltrator of cells, a digestion aid, a dilutor, a dilator, a nutrient transport system, a waste disposal system, an electrical message system, a chemical conduit, an energy combustor, a lubricant, a coolant and a latent heat bank. Water also transports oxygen to our cells, removes waste, and protects our joints and organs.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

A good guideline to consider is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces of water per day that you need. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, you should drink at least 70 ounces of water per day. If you exercise you should drink another 8 ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink coffee or alcohol, you should add at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to have 8 ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in a dry climate, you should add another 2 servings per day. It may be difficult to drink enough water on a busy day. Be sure you have water handy at all times by keeping a bottle for water with you when you are working, traveling, or exercising. If you get bored with plain water, add a little lemon or lime for a hint of flavor. There are some brands of flavored water available; however, some of them have sugar or artificial sweeteners that you should avoid.

Best Sources

The best source for water is water treated by electrolysis (providing minerals) since it reduces the oxidation of normal tissue by free oxygen radicals. Since all waste products are acidic, the best kind of water is acid free alkaline water. Drinking 4 glasses of this alkaline water is much more effective than 8 glasses of regular, bottled water or filtered tap water. Juices and sodas contain a lot of sugar and they are not a good source, so if you drink them, they do not count towards your daily amount. Diet sodas aren't a good choice either. Herbal teas that aren't diuretic are fine. Sports drinks contain electrolytes and may be beneficial, just look out for added sugar and calories that you don't need. In just the last decade medical science has begun to focus more on the extraordinary healing ability our body has and how much that ability depends on water. Our body instinctively knows how and strives to sustain youthful longevity, and in its every effort... water is the key.
